Has the Nursing Shortage Come to an End?

The shortage of RNs in the United States is not a new problem; in fact—with the exception of a period of time in the mid-1980s and early 1990s—it dates back to the 1960s. Yet, in recent years, employers in some parts of the country have reported a decrease in the demand for RNs, and in 2009 more than 54,000 qualified nursing school applicants were denied admission to nursing schools. These findings have led many people to ask, has the nursing shortage come to an end? In a word, the answer is no.

Screening Method Does Not Reduce Ovarian Cancer Mortality

New results from the National Can­cer Institute–sponsored Prostate, Lung, Col­orec­tal, and Ovar­ian Can­cer Screen­ing Trial show that screen­ing for ovar­ian can­cer with trans­vagi­nal ultra­sound and the CA-​​125 blood test did not result in fewer deaths from the dis­ease com­pared with usual care. In addi­tion, false-​​positive results from the two screen­ing meth­ods often led to unnec­es­sary surg­eries and other seri­ous complications.
