Chapter Sponsorships Allow Student Nurses to Experience Oncology

In response to mounting concerns about the nursing shortage and its impact on the care of the increasing number of individuals with cancer, ONS and the ONS Foundation have developed initiatives to mentor and encourage current and future oncology nurses. Aimed at RNs who are already practicing in oncology, as well as students enrolled in nursing programs and individuals who are undecided on a career path, various programs are in place to recruit and retain oncology nurses.

Lessons From Leadership: Impressions From ELNEC-Core

Last week, I was fortunate enough to attend a train the trainer course presented by the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) in beautiful Chicago, IL. The ELNEC-Core curriculum is designed to provide nurses with the tools and knowledge to disseminate much needed education regarding end-of-life care.

IOM Releases Inaugural Discussion Paper on Patient-​​Clinician Communication

In Octo­ber, the Insti­tute of Med­i­cine (IOM) and its Round­table on Value and Science-​​Driven Health Care released Patient-​​Clinician Com­mu­ni­ca­tion: Basic Prin­ci­ples and Expec­ta­tions, the inau­gural dis­cus­sion paper from IOM. More than 20 orga­ni­za­tions have signed on to sup­port the paper, includ­ing ONS.

Go Green During the 2012 ONS National Election

We’re pleased to announce that, in 2012, the ONS National Elec­tion will be going green. Dur­ing the 2011 ONS Mentorship/​Leadership Week­end, the ONS Nom­i­nat­ing Com­mit­tee and the ONS Board of Direc­tors dis­cussed the for­mat of how the national elec­tion process takes place. Pre­vi­ously, mem­bers could either vote online or request a paper bal­lot for vot­ing. Based on usage trends of the paper bal­lot sys­tem, feed­back from ONS mem­bers, trends from other asso­ci­a­tions, and increas­ing costs, for the first time, the 2012 bal­lot will be elec­tronic only.

Help Student Nurses Learn About Oncology Nursing Through Videos

Reach­ing stu­dent nurses with our mes­sage is easy through the many social media options avail­able. Through videos from real oncol­ogy nurses on the ONS YouTube chan­nel, ONS pub­lic rela­tions has helped to pro­mote oncol­ogy as a nurs­ing spe­cialty in a very vis­i­ble and some­times enter­tain­ing way. The highly suc­cess­ful “Why I Love Oncol­ogy Nurs­ing” video con­test held dur­ing Oncol­ogy Nurs­ing Month ear­lier this year resulted in some won­der­ful and cre­ative sub­mis­sions. If you’re ever hav­ing a bad day, take a few min­utes to watch any one of these videos, and you’ll remem­ber why you do what you do.

A new study has shown that the preva­lence of abnor­mal growths detected in screen­ing colono­scopies is higher in men than in women at all ages. These results sug­gest that the opti­mal age for an ini­tial screen­ing colonoscopy may dif­fer for men and women.
