Water Well

[By Joni Watson, MSN, MBA, RN, OCN®]

This is week 5 of 52 Weeks of Self-Care.

Low water consumption is linked to high blood sugar, dampened mood and fatigue, and poor concentration. If that doesn’t make you want to drink more water, I don’t know what will. I could definitely use a stable blood sugar, improved attitude, a bit more energy, and a sharper focus. Helllllloooooo, water!

So how much water should you drink each day? Well, what do you tell your patients? Chances are, you tell them to drink between two and three liters of water per day. Try taking your own nursing advice. You can always judge your daily hydration by your urine, ensuring that it is light yellow to colorless. Yeah, I figured you ‘d be okay with me discussing urine colors.

Try increasing your daily water intake this week. Keep a bottle of water nearby. Take a few extra two-minute breaks to stop at the water fountain. Attempt to gulp an extra glass at each meal. Bring a pitcher to your desk for the day. Keep track via a sticky note, and then, try to beat your score the next day.

Cheers to water!
