It’s time to begin talking about the new strategic plan for ONS for 2012–2016. Your first question might be, “Why does ONS need a strategic plan?” And the logical follow-up question could be, “Why does it need to change?” Finally, you may ask, “What does this mean for the membership?”
Have you ever wondered what an ONS Board of Directors meeting is like? Your Board convenes monthly with either conference calls or face-to-face meetings. Typically, face-to-face meetings occur four times a year during Congress, in July in conjunction with Mentorship/Leadership Weekend, in October for budget discussions, and in January. Some of the most important topics receiving recommendations from the Board’s latest meeting in July include the following.
The ONS Board of Directors met for a face-to-face meeting in January. An entire day of this meeting was spent on a generative discussion regarding the future of ONS. Both staff and the Board participated in small and large group discussions and brainstorming with a focus of looking at what ONS will look like in 2013. It was a wonderfully exciting day and filled with significant opportunity for future ONS development.

The ONS Board of Directors met via conference call in June, August, and September and for a face-to-face meeting in July. One of the topics discussed at these meetings was how ONS shares various types of information with its leaders and members through its Leadership e-mail list serve and the Main ONS Virtual Office. In the spirit of openness and transparency, the ONS Board looked at the type of information that should be available, who should have access to that information, and the need to publicize those that sit on project teams.
