Oncology Nurses Hold Seventh Annual Post-ONS Congress in the Netherlands

On June 16, four weeks after the ONS 35th Annual Congress, which was held May 13–16, in San Diego, CA, a group of eight oncology nurses from the Netherlands who had attended Congress presented a post-ONS Congress meeting to share information with an audience of more than 250 Dutch oncology nurses in the Jaarbeurs Congress Centre in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

ACS Offers Doctoral Scholarships in Cancer Nursing

The American Cancer Society’s doctoral scholarships are intended to provide support for study in a doctoral degree program in nursing or a related area and to prepare the graduate for a career as a cancer nurse scientist. Awards are made for up to two years, with the possibility of a two-year renewal based on satisfactory progress. The yearly stipend is $15,000 per year, which includes subsistence and tuition expenses.

Pfizer Voluntarily Withdraws Gemtuzumab From U.S. Market

Pfizer Inc. announced in June that it would be voluntarily withdrawing gemtuzumab (Mylotarg) from the U.S. market. Gemtuzumab had been in use for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a bone marrow cancer. The company took the action at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after results from a recent clinical trial raised new concerns about the product’s safety and the drug failed to demonstrate clinical benefit to patients enrolled in trials.

In April, the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer, in conjunction with the European Society for Medical Oncology, released newly updated guidelines for the use of antiemetics in the management of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
